6 Traits You Need for Good San Diego Family Dentistry (Hint: Find a Specialist)

Looking for a great dentist for the entire family?

Let’s face it: Not all dentists are the same.

You want one who makes your kids feel good about a visit to the dentist, right?

But how do you find a dentist that meets and exceeds the needs of the entire family?

It isn’t easy, but here are six traits that are essential in a good San Diego family dentist.

Read this before you decide!

1. Experience

There is no substitute for experience.

You want a dentist who has experience in treating all areas of family dentistry – especially in working with children.

Children have a particular need to feel safe and secure. An experienced dentist will know how to reassure your kids and make them feel comfortable.

They’ll know how to talk with you and your kids, how to ease your anxiety with a joke, and how to establish a personal relationship with you.

A dentist who doesn’t take the time to get to know your children and their individual needs is not for you!

For over 30 years, our group of board-certified pediatric specialists have partnered with and earned the trust of multiple generations of parents and children.

2. Flexibility

Family life is pretty hectic nowadays. The kids have after-school activities, dad has projects he needs to get done at home, and mom… well, moms are always busy!

The right dentist needs to be family-oriented and understand the difficulties that can arise when scheduling family dental visits.

Do they offer early morning and evening appointments for your convenience? Will they accommodate you with multiple appointments for different family members in one visit?

A dentist who will work with you to make scheduling appointments easy is a must!

Our PDO Specialists office is open from 8 am to 5 pm each weekday, and we also take Saturday appointments twice a month. Some evening hours are offered and during school breaks, we add an extra hygienist on staff to care for the needs of our school-aged patients – kindergarten to college!

3. Education

A dentist who takes the time to educate you about your oral health is essential.

A right dentist for your family will explain each step of your treatment (and your children’s) in terms you can understand and fully answer all of your questions.

They should make you feel confident about your treatment.

As parents ourselves, our team of experts at PDO Specialists knows it takes a village to raise and teach children the importance of proper dental care, such as brushing and flossing their teeth.

Our approach and philosophy for good oral health is never pushy and always positive. We believe in honest, open communication with all of our patients – children and adults.

A good dentist educates kids about their oral health.

4. Gentleness

This trait is critical. Especially when working with children.

A gentle approach to dentistry can make the difference between someone who is happy to visit the dentist and someone who will have a lifelong dread of dental visits.

Also, children’s small mouths require extra dexterity and your dentist needs to be adept at working in such a limited space.

The instruments and tools a dentist uses can be scary, especially to little kids. A good dentist needs to be patient.

Always gauge your family’s feelings.

If you or they have any feelings of anxiety or fear after a dental visit, it might be time to look for another San Diego family dentistry office.

At PDO Specialists, each member of our team of experts specializes in the dental care of infants, children, adolescents, and children with special needs. Pediatric dentists have specific training for working with small mouths and we use a “tell-show-do” technique that is very helpful for alleviating the fear of the unknown in our young patients.

5. Fun atmosphere

A  dentist’s office should have a fun, friendly, and welcoming atmosphere.

If your kids see other children who are happy to be in the office, they’ll feel more positive about their visit.

Look for a dentist who caters to families. Many dentists offer special events for kids or have special amenities in the office for children such as a playroom or post-appointment toys and goodies.

When deciding on a dentist, don’t be afraid to ask for a tour of the office. You’ll get to see and feel first-hand the kind of atmosphere the office generates and you’ll know right away whether or not it’s the right practice for you and your family.

We designed our PDO Specialists office to be welcoming and comfortable for all members of the family, and our younger patients really love our playroom and life-sized arcade games!

Your dentist should make visits fun!

6. Financing

A good dentist will want you to be able to afford the dentistry your family needs.

They should accept a variety of payment methods, and the office should make sure you are getting the full benefits allowed by any dental insurance you have.

If you don’t have dental insurance, do they offer alternate ways to finance your treatment, such as accepting CareCredit or in-office financing?

PDO Specialists want you to get the best dental care possible, so we work along with you to get the financing you need. We accept most insurances and CareCredit financing, and we offer in-office financing to our non-insured patients.
